23 APRIL 2018
What a busy week it has been for Newlands Rotary! Pippa has been hard at work organising an interactive packing session for the Flamingo Project, Vanessa hosted a very successful Interact Workshop and a number of Newlands members who are on the new District Leadership Team (DLT), spent the weekend planning for the year ahead.
All of that before we head off to the conference in Luderitz! It's definitely time for a long weekend and we trust you will have a restful one. Travel safely if you are spending it outside the city.

The Interacters had a lot of fun working together to complete  49 care packs, which will soon be distributed to hospitals around the Cape metropole.
Newlands Rotary's Youth Chair, Vanessa Rousseu, hosted an Interact Workshop this past weekend at the Nassau Centre, Groote Schuur High School. The workshop was organised by RC Newlands and involved 25 schools with approximately 130 students attending.
The Interact Clubs represented are sponsored by 6 Rotary Clubs in our district: Newlands, Wynberg, Claremont, Groote Schuur, Kirstenbosch and Paarl.
The Rotaract Club of Wynberg assisted with the running of the programme, which included a guest speaker - Bryony Bosman, Head Girl of Milnerton High.
Rotaracter Sean Oberholzer led ice-breaker activities to encourage conversations between the participants and there were a number of breakaway groups to discuss Interact roles and projects.
Packing for a joint project, initiated by Rumaanah Seedat, a member of the Interact Club of Groote Schuur High School, resulted in 49 care packs being packed for rape survivours.
There was also a breakaway session for teachers and Rotarians, led by Nora See.
Bryony Bosman, Head Girl of Milnerton High, addresses the Interacters.  She focused on the importance of servant leadership and taking action to serve the needs of the various communities.
Wynberg Rotaracter, Sean Oberholzer organised this ice breaker, encouraging the Interacters to share ideas and opinions.

Congratulations to Janey Ball and the District 9350 PI team who were featured in the latest Rotary Africa magazine for the incredible work they are doing in compiling data on the impact of Club Projects which is then being used to raise public awareness of the impact that Rotary makes in their local community.

As mentioned by Garnet at our meeting last week, members interested in joining the monthly Fellowship Hike are encouraged to pop him an email if you wish to be included in the event email notifications. The group is a loosely affiliated group of Rotarians, and friends, who hike on the 3rd Sunday of the month, usually followed by an inexpensive meal near to the finish. They cater for strong walkers and those not so fast, so they can end up with 2 groups. There will always be a committee member leading each group. They also arrange about 3 out of town hikes which is a longer, weekend getaway. It is great way to meet other club members from our district and a wonderful way to get some extra exercise in!
If you would like to be included in their email list, please send Garnet an email on
Thank you to Brian Pickup who forwarded this interesting article on the Rights of the Consumer When Buying a Car. The Consumer Protection Act offers a number of 'safeguards' for consumers and it's a great idea to spend some time familiarising yourself with the various provisions.
If you cannot do your job on the day, please find someone who can do it instead of you, then contact the Sergeant on the day to update the roster. Please don't leave this until the Monday afternoon – let the Sergeant know in advance if you have not been able to arrange a swap. If you are going to be away for particular future meetings let Shelley Finch know.
